In November 2022, the Council commenced the trial closure of the Bellambi Street Square Project, at the corner of Bellambi Street and Sailors Bay Road, Northbridge.

This trial closure was fully funded through the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces Round 2 program, which sought to activate local centres and help them quickly recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 health orders.

The aim of the trial closure was to also understand the community’s views on the long-term proposal for this area which was included in the Council-adopted Local Centres Strategy and the Northbridge Public Domain Masterplan.

The trial closure is a smaller area than envisaged in the Public Domain Masterplan, as a larger area requires key changes to access to private space which involves further detailed design and planning.

Between 6 February and 8 March 2023, we sought community feedback as to whether the Bellambi Street Square road closure should be ongoing.

We also held a community drop-in session at the Bellambi Street Square on Saturday, 18 February.

At its meeting of 26 April 2023, after considering a staff report and engagement outcomes report, the Council resolved to retain the Bellambi St Square.
