Update

Thank you for your feedback. In July 2021 Council adopted the Castlecrag Community Plan - Landscape plan but deferred the implementation until an alternate site for the eight public car spaces is resolved. The report is available in the Consulation Summary on this page.

Willoughby City Council welcomes your feedback on the proposed new community park at the Castlecrag Village shops using the survey below. The survey closes Wednesday 26 May 2021.

Castlecrag is celebrating its Centenary in 2021. The Castlecrag Estate subdivision was created by architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in 1921. The suburb is renowned internationally for its urban landscape design and houses by the Griffins.

In acknowledgment of the Griffins’ legacy, Council supports the creation of a new park at the Castlecrag shops. The new park was informed by community consultation as a recommendation adopted in 2019 in the Willoughby Local Centres Strategy to 2036 (WLCS). The WLCS seeks to promote a network of thriving, attractive, and distinctive village centres throughout the Council area.

The proposal: The conversion of the existing 8 space public car park on the corner of Edinburgh Road and The Postern into a community park with the aims to:

  • Provide a low-key outdoor natural and easily accessible space for the community to gather and enjoy
  • Provide a memorial sculpture to Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1961)
  • Provide a space that celebrates the centenary of the Griffins’ time in Castlecrag and acknowledges their contribution to the suburb.

The Landscape Plan for the new community park is available in the Document Library.

The local community is invited to comment on the park proposal. There would be a loss of public car parking spaces. The parking loss needs to be considered by the community along with the benefit of additional open space.
