Background

In response to community concerns about pedestrian safety and safe crossing options along Smith Street, Chatswood, Council is proposing improved safety measures in this area.

Funding

We were successful in receiving funding under Transport for NSW (TfNSW 2024/25 – 2025/26 Road Safety Program to do this work.
The Australian and NSW Governments are investing significant funding to improve safety and reduce crashes on NSW roads as part of the Road Safety Program in partnership with Local Government.

What’s been done so far

Local businesses and residents supported Stage 1 of this project during community engagement in late 2024. This part of the project will include:

  • a raised pedestrian crossing on Smith Street at Alleyne Street
  • kerb blisters to allow pedestrian visibility
  • bus stop outside Planet Mino removed and merged with the bus stop 100-150 metres south on Smith Street.*
  • bus stop directly outside of Woolworths to remain

*As part of Stage 1 road safety improvements and to ensure pedestrian visibility is not obstructed, the current bus stop outside of Planet Mino will be removed and merged with another bus stop approximately 100-150 meters south on Smith Street. This decision was made in consultation with Transport for NSW, local businesses and residents and approved by Council in December 2024.

Stage 1 is currently in the design phase and will be integrated with Stage 2 as per TfNSW requirements.
