Chatswood Bicycle Route Upgrade
Consultation has concluded
Update
The stakeholder and community feedback received by Council has been considered and, where appropriate, incorporated into the draft detailed design plans. The final detailed design plans were considered by the Traffic Committee at its meeting on 20 February 2019 in item 4.2 Centennial Avenue to Frank Channon Walk Chatswood - Bicycle Infrastructure and Shared Path. Council considered the Traffic Committee minutes at its meeting on 11 March 2019 and adopted the Traffic Committee’s recommendation which was that Council approve the detailed design for bicycle infrastructure including line marking, new regulatory signage, logos and direction signage on Centennial Avenue, Whitton Road, Oliver Road, Albert Avenue, Crispe Lane, Ellis Street and Frank Channon Walk including a new shared path along the southern footpath of Albert Avenue, between the Pacific Highway and Crispe Lane
The agenda and minutes are provided on Council’s website here.
The works have been completed.
Backgound
The proposed upgrades include civil works and upgrades to line markings, bicycle logos and signage. This project is identified as a community priority in the:
- Our Future Willoughby 2028 – Community Strategic Plan (http://edocs.willoughby.nsw.gov.au/DocumentViewer.ashx?dsi=5094717);
- Willoughby City Council’s Bike Plan Review 2012 (http://edocs.willoughby.nsw.gov.au/DocumentViewer.ashx?dsi=2811107); and
- Willoughby City Council’s Bike Plan Update 2017 (http://www.willoughby.nsw.gov.au/About-Council/Forms-Policies---Publications/Publications/wcc-bike-plan-update-2017/)
This also aligns with the NSW Government’s aim of making bike riding safe, convenient and enjoyable.
The concept plans include the following proposed changes to the existing environment:
- Upgrading current bicycle treatment (including bicycle logos, line marking and wayfinding) along Centennial Avenue, Whitton Road and Oliver Road;
- A new shared path along Albert Avenue between the Pacific Highway and Crispe Lane;
- New line marking and bicycle logos on Crispe Lane and on Ellis Street;
- New wayfinding signage at Frank Channon Walk; and
- New line marking in the underpass between the Frank Channon Walk and Chatswood Oval
No street parking will be lost as a result of the improvement works.
What happens next?
All comments will be taken into consideration and will contribute to finalising the concept plans.
When are the works planned for?
The works are planned for Mid 2019, depending on the outcome of the current consultation process and final approval.

While it would be ideal if Council could provide dedicated cycleway facilities, this is not something that can very often be accommodated in built up high density areas where there is not enough road space.
