What is the difference between ‘sinusoidal’ road humps and single lane slow points?

    Sinusoidal road humps are less severe than the more commonly used ‘Watts-profile’ speed humps with which residents would be more familiar.

    If single lane slow points are introduced they would normally be configured so as to give one direction of traffic priority over the other. 

    For Coolaroo Road, eastbound vehicles would be required to give way to westbound vehicles. Similarly, northbound vehicles in Dalrymple Avenue would give way to southbound vehicles. This is intended to reduce conflict and further improve safety.

    Whatever devices are finally selected, they would ideally be placed at intervals of about 80 metres in order effectively reduce vehicle speeds. 

    What is the progress to date regarding the community consultation?

    In September 2015 Council resolved to adopt most of the recommendations of the Mowbray Road West Traffic Study. This study was carried out by consultants, PeopleTrans, on behalf of Council. The Study found that Coolaroo Road and Dalrymple Avenue are key routes for locals, but that they are also used as rat-runs by other drivers to avoid congestion on Mowbray Road West during the morning peak period. One of the recommendations approved by Council was for the introduction of traffic calming measures in the form of local area traffic management (LATM) works in Coolaroo Road and Dalrymple Avenue.

    A concept design was subsequently prepared for the LATM works. These measures were aimed at addressing the concerns of local residents regarding safety by reducing speed and aggressive driver behaviour on those roads.

    In November 2015 Council arranged a workshop to reach agreement on what the LATM scheme should achieve, and the location and type of LATM devices that should be introduced. This workshop was attended by two residents from Coolaroo Road and two residents from Dalrymple Avenue, as well as Council staff. The resident delegates agreed that two options should be considered. These options were either:

    1. ‘sinusoidal’ road humps; or

    2. single lane slow points.

    A report was considered by the Willoughby Traffic Committee on 15 June 2016 and it was recommended that residents be consulted about both of the above options. 

    Council is aiming to determine whether or not there is general consensus for one option over the other or whether residents prefer an alternative type of treatment or no intervention at all.
